In 1883, Mrs. Louisa Coxon and eighteen others wrote a letter to the Acting Colonial Secretary, the Honorable F. Stewart, requesting a “small piece of ground for the purpose of health and recreation”. The proposal was accepted and marked the birth of the Ladies' Recreation Club.

Important Milestones
  • 1884 - Lady Bowen, wife of Sir George Ferguson, Governor of Hong Kong, opened the Club.
  • 1915 - Clubhouse built.
  • 1938 - Club was incorporated under the Companies Ordinance of 1933.
  • 1949 - Swimming Pool opening.
  • 1952 - First debenture scheme launched.
  • 1955 - Lady Grantham performed the opening ceremony of the Main Clubhouse.
  • 1962 - Junior Clubhouse demolished and construction of the Family Clubhouse begins.
  • 1963 - Family Clubhouse opens.
  • 1966 - First Baker Cup Tennis tournament.
  • 1967 - First LRC Swimming team is formed.
  • 1976 - New swimming pool opens.
  • 1977 - Sports Clubhouse opens.
  • 1978 - Main Clubhouse reopens.
  • 1983 - LRC celebrates 100 years.
  • 1997 - The Handover Ball.
  • 2006 - May Road building opens.
  • 2007 - First Pink Ribbon Tennis Tournament in aid of the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.
  • 2008 - 125th anniversary.
  • 2009 - New Deck built overlooking the centre tennis courts.
  • 2012 - Main Clubhouse renovation project begins.
  • 2013 - LRC celebrates 130 years.
